Malcolm Tucker: The Missing Phone

Following our work on the Tess Daly app, Agant and I were invited by Faber and Faber to pitch ideas for a number of their upcoming releases in May 2010. One of the ideas became Malcolm Tucker: The Missing Phone, an iPhone version of the similarly-titled book.

While the book adopts the central conceit that it is a folder of documents lost by Malcolm Tucker, the iPhone app presents an interface to the contents of his lost phone. We repurposed an entire book's worth of content to fit this adjusted concept, then added a whole raft of new content written specially for the app by The Thick of It's writing team and (in some cases) recorded by the cast.

For good measure, we used a portion of the content to create a new interactive story. Listening to a particular voicemail triggers a whole storyline, told through emails and voicemails, that plays out over a few days of the user's own real time.

The app was released in December 2010 to a lot of very nice reviews and even earned us a BAFTA nomination!
